Powerplant System

The Quantum Turbine Powerplant system for our FLS Microjet was designed around the PBS TJ100 turbojet engine. This compact, lightweight, high-tech engine features a modern FADEC control, and a high thrust to weight ratio.  BD-Micro worked directly with PBS to further develop several engine safety features for our application.

In developing the Quantum Turbine Powerplant System for the FLS Microjet our primary goals were safety and reliability. To that end, we dedicated extensive resources to design and testing. Several rounds of revision were completed before we were satisfied with the results.

The powerplant system is comprised of several sub-systems in addition to the engine unit.  These sub-systems are made up of the following:

1)       Mounting and Supports

       i.      Designed to provide accessability and ease of maintenance
       ii.       Allows quick engine removal

2)       Fuel System

       i.      Capable of Inverted operation
       ii.      Dual pumps for redundancy
       iii.      Manual Emergency fuel shutoff
iv.      De-fueling capability aids wing removal

3)       Air Induction

       i.      Low drag NACA inlets

ii.      FOD screen on engine inlet

4)       Electrical Systems

       i.      Dedicated engine electrical bus
       ii.      Independent load center

iii.     Autonomous engine starting (no external power required)

5)       Engine Control and Monitoring
       i.      Computerized throttle control unit (sends commands to FADEC)
       ii.      Emergency Backup Control
iii.      Dedicated Graphical Display for pre-start systems check, integrity monitoring, and current operating parameters

6)       EFIS Display and monitoring of engine parameters

       i.      Allows logging of engine data correlated to flight parameters. Provides a means of trend analysis.
ii.      Engine data available to either or both EFIS display units
iii.      Backup engine display independent of EFIS units

7)       Smoke System

       i.      Inverted operation capable
       ii.      HOTAS activated switching
iii.      High capacity tank with EFIS oil level display

8)       Thrust Attenuator

9)       Performance Optimized Jet Thrust Nozzle
